Introduction: Curriculum

This section deals with the idea and definitions of curriculum. I believe curriculum encompasses everything that is used to teach a student. This includes all the physical materials such as textbooks, hand out materials, power point slides, as well as all the lecture materials, things said in office hours or other verbal communications.

I believe curriculum contains all of the planned and unplanned experiences we have for our students. There is also the hidden curriculum that our students experience. These are the unscripted and informal lessons student learn that may or may not reinforce the known curriculum. These unscripted lessons may teach students how to discriminate or how to treat all students with respect. They may teach students how to bully others or how to stand up for others. It’s imperative that teachers learn this hidden curriculum and do their best to at least be aware of its consequences and possible advantages and disadvantages. I close with views on my curriculum and an example of a unit I would like to teach.
