Introduction: Focus on Learners

In this section I have outlined what I feel the role of the student is as well as the dynamic of the student-teacher relationship within the classroom. I’ve also included items such as student input, culture and identity in the classroom and the importance of knowing your students in ways such as through their learning styles as I feel each of these items is necessary to understand and explore in order to have a dynamic and productive classroom.

I feel the role of the student is both learner and teacher in multiple ways. We often view the student as simply an empty vessel that needs to be filled with knowledge by the teacher, but I feel this is an incomplete and inadequate description. One role of the student, and I feel the most important role, is to learn from both the teacher and the other students. Likewise, it is the teachers role and responsibility to learn from his or her students. I have taught a few times at different levels and I have learned from students every time.

This section will take the reader through the different roles and aspects of the teacher and student.
