Sample Lesson Plans

The format I built for the lesson plans was a combination of a few formats I had seen. I chose this format because it included space for not only the material that was to be covered but also room for what the teacher should be doing as well as what the student is responsible for during that time. I specifically chose to have a large section at the top for the purpose because I feel it’s imperative to be able to not only have a purpose for each lesson, but also to be able to articulate this purpose as it helps center the lesson. I also added a section for the standard because it is important, especially with the constant focus on testing, to be sure that my lessons are in line with the standards and that the lesson pacing is on target. The warm up and wrap up sections of the lesson plan allow me to focus on how I want the lesson to start and what I want to the students to walk away knowing.

I believe that pedagogy does include as much art as it does science. Any profession that includes the interaction of people includes the art of human interaction. Some teachers rely solely on their ability to interact with their students and teach off “the fly.” I believe that thorough planning is necessary to ensure that all students’ needs are being met. As I explained earlier, planning is the foundation that allows differentiated instruction to work. Only when sound planning, a positive attitude and a sincere desire to teach come together is there hope for true learning to occur.
